Photography

Malik Leigh, Esq.

I have been shooting for many years.  When I was a kid, I wanted to be a war photographer.  Because I was an athlete for such a long time, I got my start shooting body builders and fitness models free-handed and in black and white.  This was back before instagram filters and digital cameras.  But that camera was stolen.  Currently, I'm using a Nikon D5100, toggling between RAW settings and various low apertures to get sharp colours or distinct b&w shots.  It is an older camera and nothing fancy, but who says it has to be fancy when you are doing what you love.  My art is my eye and in my writing.

I am interested to know how this Country eats it's young. And because people don't read like they used to, an image captures objective emotions that words simply cannot.

Historic Northwest: Florida's oldest continuously inhabited Black Neighborhood

And in the crosshairs of typical racially motivated ethinic cleansing; better known as Urban Renewal or Ethinic Clensing. Like its next door neighbor, Pleasant City, Northwest is so expansive that you can traverse 75% of the downtown area by foot.  Its problems are many. However, its main problem comes from a city government agency called the CRA or the Community Redevelopment Agency that aligns itself with the most opportunistic and traditionally sinister Black Churches in the area, to help remove poor black citizens from their homes and into the property holding book of the City.  Sadly, this is occuring in almost all traditionally black towns and neighborhoods in South Florida: Overtown in Miami, Gifford in Indian River County, Pompano Beach, in Broward, Belle Glades, in far West Palm Beach County, and many others.  Northwest looks like a neighborhood tht time forgot, mainly because it has. The city has dotted buildings with No Trespassing signs to devalue the area so billionaire investors can buy whole blocks for cheap. The crime has never recovered from the massive infusion of drugs in the 80s. And the local school district work in concert to pool Northwest's students together at apartheid schools where education is rationed and unequal. Sadly, because of the massive amounts of crime that originates from this neighborhood, due to the local police department's deplorable lack of patrolling in the area, Northwest is decaying fast.  Too fast to perhaps stop it, and definitely too fast for minds to change long enough to save it.
